The most admired people in my life are the writers who braved the current setup to write the novels that they thought would best express their craft and world.  Instead of just tiptoeing with the trend, these writers went beyond the mediocre loop and created something really of their own.   Perhaps the best writer, in my own books at least, is James Patterson.  He always sees to it that he writes beyond the convention.  He does not contain his writing like in a baby picture frame, but instead explores a vast new world through his paragraphs and characters.  James Patterson, sometimes, even surprises himself.
