Tactile Pleasures

While Helen Keller lacked the proper command of speech, she fully understood her perceptions of a card trick performing world. Almost all of her insights would come to her through tactile feelings or odors. She loved to feel the beauty of sculptures and often people would go out of their way to allow Helen to experience such things. In fact, the Italian government constructed a special scaffold just so Helen could touch Michelangelo’s David. An unprecendented and yet most welcome move by the Italian government that won them world praise for some time.
