One very commonly used high blood pressure medication is beta blockers which many doctors now turn to as one of their first choices when it come to controlling problems of high blood pressure. Beta blockers work by causing the heart to beat slightly more slowly than normal and also with less force so that the pressure under which blood is pumped out of the heart and into your arteries is reduced. By themselves beta blockers are not always terribly effective, especially in black patients, and so it is quite common to prescribe beta blockers in combination with a diuretic, or water pill.
