PS3 Tips: PS3 As A Computer

December 30th, 2007 by admin

While not many PS3 tips would list this, the fact is that you can use your PS3 as a computer by installing selective Linux distributions on the accompanying hard drive. Yellow Dog Linux claims to be the ‘official distribution that runs on the Play Station 3 as it is sponsored by Sony and its inherent HDTV support. The console is also known to run a number of other distributions like Ubuntu, Open SUSE Fedora and Gentoo. Technically it is possible to port any distro which can access 6 of the 7 Synergistic Processing Element of the PS3s Cell Processor. This is found in Linux Kernel 2.6.21 and above so any live CD can also turn your PS3 into a computer.
